Ginger is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or ginger, is widely used as a spice and a folk medicine. It is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows annual pseudostems (false stems) about 30 to 90 cm (12 to 36 in) tall. It has broad leaves arranged two opposite each other on the stem. The leaves are 20–45 cm (8–18 in) long and 7–15 cm (3–6 in) broad. The flowers are small, white or pale pink, and are borne in terminal spikes. The fruit is a capsule that contains many small seeds.
